Events line up for September 2015 in Del Mar Fairgrounds
It’s that time of the year where we enter the “BER” months. That means Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner! If you will ask me, my favorite time of the year is Halloween. I like seeing kids dressing up in cute costumes and an excuse for adults to dress up whoever they want! Plus, I get to put scary designs in my house.
Since I’ve been shamelessly confessing my love for the “Ber” months, I decided to compile all the events for September 2015 and for the following months as well. I’m putting this up with the hope of helping you guys make some changes or adjustments in your busy schedules, and to make room for that quality time for your family and friends.
I hope you find this article useful and join me mark our calendars together for Del Mar Fairgrounds Events for September 2015. You can also refer to the schedule of events for 2015 Del Mar Horse Race.

Del Mar Race Track Preparing for Two Seasons This Year At Del Mar!

DEL MAR PREPARING FOR DUAL
RACING SEASONS IN 2014
Del Mar Thoroughbred Meet Extended Into 2 Sessions This Year in 2014.
Del Mar Race Track will have their regular meet this summer and an additional one in November.
ith all approvals ensured and long-range projections starting to come into clear focus, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has begun to move forward toward a two-meet racing season in 2014 – the initial session being its usual summer stand, the second a shorter run covering the month of November.
Near the conclusion of 2013, Del Mar received the green light for its dual meets from both the California Horse Racing Board and the California Coastal Commission. In addition, it also worked through date and grounds issues with its landlord – the 22nd District Agricultural Association, the state body that oversees the multi-purpose, 350-acre Del Mar Fairgrounds that is home to the seaside racing oval.
With all parties in agreement, DMTC officials now are preparing to put on their usual special summer show followed by a unique fall session that will help patch one of the holes in the Southern California racing calendar caused by the closing of Betfair Hollywood Park in December.
The track’s summer season – which will be its 75th going back to 1937 – will open on Thursday, July 17 and go forward to Wednesday, September 3. Over the past several decades Del Mar usually has started its regular meet on a Wednesday, but with the San Diego County Fair running until Sunday, July 6 in 2014, the extra day to prepare the grounds and the racing surface – and to allow horses to adapt to it – was considered a safety priority. Del Mar last opened on a Thursday in 1999, and also opened on that day in 1969 and 1956.
Del Mar’s fall meeting will have 15 racing days, opening on Friday, November 7 and concluding on Sunday, November 30. It will race Friday-Saturday-Sunday on its first weekend, then settle into a four-days-per-week (Thursday through Sunday) schedule for the balance of the session. In conjunction with the singular nature of the second season, track officials are planning a totally different theme to the session, one that calls on the track’s Hollywood roots harkening back to its founder, Bing Crosby, and his show business connections.
In 2015 Del Mar is scheduled to run a similar twofold arrangement with slightly different dates. The 2015 summer season is slated for Wednesday, July 15 through Labor Day Monday, September 7, an expansion of its standard dates from seven to eight weekends and a total of 41 racing days. The fall session would be scheduled from Wednesday, October 28 through Wednesday, December 2, a five-week season that would enable the track to be open and available during the Breeders’ Cup traditional dates, which are normally either the last weekend in October or the first in November.
“Our fall race meeting starting this year will be totally separate from our summer session,” noted Del Mar Thoroughbred Club president and CEO Joe Harper. “They will be two different animals. We know our summer meet is a winner; we’ve proven it over and over again. And we expect our autumn run can be special, too, in its own way. With the backing of our horsemen and all our many racing fans in the San Diego area, we think we can put on a first-rate show here in the fall and help to keep racing in Southern California strong and successful.”

Opening Day At The Del Mar Racetrack was a success!
in Coldwell Banker, Del Mar, Del Mar Entertainment, Del Mar Social Events, Del Mar Social Scene, In My Opinion Only
Opening Day at The Del Mar Racetrack is always memorable!
Del Mar Racetrack is the place to be on July 18th, Opening day.
Lights, Camera and action! Actually on opening day it is very similar: Dress, Hat, Shoes, Money for Gambling and your off! Of course that applies to the ladies, which is really one of the only reasons men actually go to Opening Day to begin with! To just be there is a treat, but to be able to be a member and get into The Del Mar Turf Club or The Suites is truly a plus. This year I traded out my box on the finish line in exchange for my good friend Gino’s 6 seater table which is directly next to mine every opening day. This year we had a great group of people who collectively, made it a fun day for everyone. Here is a set of pictures of my guests:
With over 20 “Opening Days” under my belt, before race #1 I made all my bets and put them in my wallet. To this time I have not looked at whether I made any money. However, I had a day full of adventure. One of the benefits of being with The Winfelds, owner of Fine Living Magazine, I followed Heather around and we took pictures of all the best and maybe..adventurous outfits! We also ran into Phoebe Chong Chua who now has a television series “Live Fit” Series on Living well….you can see why from the pictures! Here are some of our pictures enjoying Opening Day:
Some people get excited when they see Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, George Clooney or the like. Well, for me it is Jimmy “The Hat” Allard. Jimmy The Hat is a celebrity and I ran into him at the elevator of the Turf Club. Jimmy “The Hat” has hit the Pick Six more than 200 times. He is the only professional gambler on record to hit Pick Six tickets in excess of $1 million three years in a row. Now for me, only hitting the pick 6 once and the pick 5 once, that is one hell of an accomplishment. I just had to go up to him, introduce myself and of course ask him his picks for Opening Day at Del Mar Racetrack. As calm and collected as he could be, he leaned over and said very quietly “keep your money in your purse. This is not the day to bet but look me up and I will be here all season.” Luckily my friend Lynn was with us and witnessed it and we got a picture with him.
I think I will sit down now and go through my tickets from opening day to see if I had any winners. But on Opening Day of Del Mar, the winners are the attendees that pack The Turf Club, Box Seats, and especially those in the winners circle.Tomorrow night is the second of 4’O’clock Fridays and I will be looking for Jimmy for some tips.
I even love the new logo: Del Mar Cool As Ever!

Del Mar Fair Has The Turkey Stampede Show And Some More Fried Foods!

Del Mar Fair Has More Than Just Fried Foods!
Del Mar Fair Has More Than Just Fried Foods, Try The Turkey Stampede Show!
Right After I wrote my first blog about The Del Mar Fair, I decided to make an “outing of it” with some of my good friends, young and ..well..my age. I had some sons of friends with me, some daughters, friends I love to spend time with and my biggest fan. Once we got in the gates, I told the boys to “split” and boy did they run off with money and ride tickets in hand faster than I could blink! The rest of us enjoyed a leisurely walk through the Fair. Since I have been a Del Mar Fair Attendee for over 40 years, I have skillfully developed a “systematic approach” on how to view everything at The Del Mar Fair in less than 2 days. This was our first day and in my book, first the Landscaping Competitions in the Wine Festival area. What a great combination! But we had to pace ourselves since we arrived around 1pm and I knew it was happy hour somewhere but just not sure where. First Direct Eating Establishment has always been Roxy’s where they serve Battered Artichoke Hearts. Luckily they have a year round restaurant in Encinitas to get my fix in the winter. Then one must visit all the buildings that sell everything from Emu Oil, Palm Readings, Sushi Makers to Personality Tests for only a few dollars and your signature! I have 2 favorites in this area and they are The Garlic Man from Gilroy California, who sells everything from Garlic Mustard to Garlic Spices for your Popcorn! The Second is ..well for lack of a better term “The Nuts Man” who sells bags of so many types of nuts from Chocolate Almonds to Roasted and Salted Cashews.
After a few “initial appetizers” and purchases we made our way to the “Ski Lift” that took us to the infield. I had heard about this Turkey Stampede Show from Ramona, California that was a “Not To Miss Item” At the Del Mar Fair. The show only runs twice a day and we had to wait quite a while for it to start. Every minute of the wait was worth it to watch these Big Tom Turkeys Run Around a Course. And I thought Race Horses were the only thing worth betting on!
I would have missed where this is but the girls showed me in the innfield that it was just next to the world of Horses Display.
I actually did video the show because I thought it was so funny.
I couldn’t believe how many people were there waiting for the show so I created another video of the kids competing.
After The Turkey Stampede Show, I noticed a new Food Stand this year of fried lobster…I thought that was so interesting (at least to me) but no one was in line for the lobster. $20 a lobster seemed to high a price for a “food item” at The Del Mar Fair in this economy. Since we did buy the “all you can enter The Del Mar Fair”
admission tickets of $24 I have been thinking about going back and trying the lobster stand this week.
Now we were ready for some serious eating: On our menu was the Fried Avocado, 2.5 pound Turkey Leg with Bacon, and the kids wanted chocolate covered fried bacon. A little Vodka Tonic made it all taste terrific! (Well the chocolate covered bacon was a bit much.) Notice the picture in my gallery that shows Fairgrounds Officials conviniently parked the ambulance right in front of where all the Fried Food was sold!
Within a few hours, the boys were back out of money and ride tickets. The sun was beggining to descend so as a group we decided on a few more rides before we left.
Ferris wheel is always a must, especially at sunset in Del Mar. Here is a quick video of that lovely sunset on Friday:
Once in the “ride mood” I decided I wanted to do my favorite one that doesn’t turn upside down but goes around. I keep forgetting the name of it but you might recognize it from this picture:
The sun started setting, the lights were being turned on in the “Ride Zone” and the night crowd was starting to wander in before the evening concert. That was our cue to leave for the day and wait for the next day we will return this week! Below is a gallery of all the pictures I took at The Del Mar Fair.
So to all my dear friends who mumble, complain about Fair Traffic, avoid Del Mar during the Fair Season, I simply respond that you haven’t seen it lately!
