The Crosby

The Crosby is another gated community right outside of The Rancho Santa Fe Covenant. It is located off Del Dios Highway on the way to Escondido. The Crosby is a “full service” country club as I like to call it because it has a great golf course, swimming facilities, formal and casual dining areas and a very strong “community feel” that you do not normally see in these environments. I have a good friend who is a member there so I play in a lot of ladies tournaments there and have grown to really love the course.

A little history: The area of The Crosby was only one area of a vast “Rancheria” before the land was grated to Juan Maria Osuna in 1840 by the governor of Mexico (I go more into detail about that in the Rancho Santa Fe Covenant area).

Today The Crosby is comprised of 722-acres of Southern California property located just north of San Diego, East of Del Mar. The Crosby Estates sits mostly on land formerly owned by Bing Crosby and his family. Interestingly, all of the streets in The Crosby Estates are named after songs or movies Bing made Famous. The Road to Rio, The Road To Morocco, Top of The Crosby Way are some of the names of the street.

Communities Near The Crosby

 

Currently The Crosby is comprised of 70 Villas, 281 custom quality homes and 70 estate home sites are all surrounding an 18 hole private golf course. Prices for the town homes or Villas start at $1.2mil as of 11/11/2014.

Davidson Communities built The Crosby. Because of where it lies, there is a lot of property to the east of the country club that now Davidson Communities is building more communities. There is a bit of controversy because some of these home developments are not at the price points of The Crosby Estates yet homeowners have access to the front gates of The Crosby and can drive through the country club to get to their developments. There is a front gate and a back gate, and the back gate is in an eastern area called 4S Ranch. Arista is one of these developments that Davidson Communities is building just east of The Crosby.

The golf course is a Fred Couples designed golf course. Without reading anything about the course I am going to tell you my opinion: at first, I was beat up on this course. First time playing it I thought I would never go back. But each time after I played, I started understanding that the “risk reward” shots the course offered, they weren’t kidding! 135 yard par 3’s over a ravine, 165 yard par 3s straight downhill for ladies are the two most challenging holes for my 15 handicap ability. However, as I have learned the risks, and calculated them more seriously, I have had some of my bests rounds of golf there.

The service and general manager Ed is the best set of employees I have ever seen. Even as a guest of a member, I am constantly greeted and felt welcome at all times. As a Realtor, I have taken clients to play there when the decision arises where to join after they buy a home in The Ranch.

The one negative I find at The Crosby is that they do not allow home owners to have their own golf carts. Therefore, if you want to drive down to the club for dinner, drinks or practice a few puts, you have to drive your car down.

One of the largest properties I ever built/sold was for a famous female tennis star who bought a 3 acre parcel from me, then we proceeded to build a 25,000 square foot home on the property with a 10 car garage. It was a learning experience working with The Crosby HOA and architectural committee. Every time I go to The Crosby, I look up at the largest estate on the highest of lots and think, “I was part of that exciting project.” She still owns it today and vacations in between tournaments there.
