Reese Witherspoons Ojai retreat has hit the market for $10 million
Reese Witherspoons Ojai retreat has hit the market for $10 million. The horse property was not only a getaway for Witherspoon and her family, but also a rumored escape for actor Robert Pattinson. According to reports, Pattinson headed to Witherspoon’s Ojai estate after it surfaced that girlfriend and fellow “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart had cheated on him.The Ojai home is an hour removed from Los Angeles — and the paparrazi that comes with it — in an area that feels “like you’re in the country and you’re away from it all,” says listing agent Billy Rose, co-founder of brokerage The Agency.
“Assuming the reports are correct and Pattinson was there, it’s a place that people don’t care; there’s not the same sort of celebrity attraction that we have here [in L.A.] with the vans and buses with people who want to go look at houses that people lived in 40 years ago,” explained Rose. “I think that you can be much more of a normal person up there.”
Normalcy is probably what Pattinson was pursuing and likely what also attracted A-lister Witherspoon when she purchased the home.
The estate at 915 Del Norte Rd, Ojai, CA 93023 was originally built as a stable for Edward Libbey, the glassware magnate, who is also considered the modern founding father of Ojai. Libbey commissioned celebrity architect Wallace Neff, who put his own touch on the property.
“Ghostbusters” actor and director Harold Ramis owned the home previously, and designer Kathy Ireland also owned the home at one point. Ireland completed a full remodel of the property, but as Rose explained, kept the authenticity of the home.
When Witherspoon picked up the home in 2008, the Oscar winner put her own touch on it but maintained the integrity of its character, Rose said. The home was recently featured in both “House Beautiful” and “Elle Decor.”
She also “did a fair amount of sort of the expensive but under-appreciated enhancements that allow you to keep using your home,” Rose said.
The end result is a historic property that hasn’t lost any of its character throughout the years. Sitting on 7 private acres, the ranch has a 4-bed, 3.5-bath main house, barn, horse stables and carriage house. The grounds feature an organic garden, acres of pasture and a swimming pool. Witherspoon married her new husband, Jim Toth, on the estate’s grounds in March.
“All of the structures feel solid and that they’ve been there for centuries,” Rose said. “They’ve been part of the land.”
Inside, the main house is light and bright with original stonework, plank flooring and Spanish-tiled details. The great room has a double-height ceiling and central fireplace.
“You can just soak up the authenticity and the richness, the character of the home,” Rose said.
