There is a reason why San Diego is called “America’s Finest City”. True to the city’s nickname, the party never stops! This July comes the 2016 Del Mar Horse Race! This is considered to be the most fabulous, fashionable and fun festivities in the west. Del Mar race track “Where Turf meets the Surf” is the second largest horse-racing venue in the western United States and over 40,000 excited horse racing fans attends the event yearly. Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937 and has put Del Mar on the map. The event itself is a massive attraction for both locals and visitors alike and made Del Mar the summer haven of the Hollywood crowd.

Opening Day Friday, July 15, 2016

 Newcomers’ Seminar 

From July 15th to Sept 5th and races 5 times a week from Wednesdays to Sundays, you have plenty of time to get in and wager on your favorite horses. Doesn’t even matter if you’re a first timer, the event has everything you need to learn about what’s hot and what’s not! Newcomers can attend a seminar for beginners to learn valuable horse racing information including understanding the odds, easy handicapping methods, money management and insider racing tips. Pick up helpful materials and receive free expert selections from host Frank Scatoni and Today’s Racing Digest. This happens every day in the Plaza de Mexico just inside the stretch run entrance gate. Seminar starts 1 hour before the first race.

 Opening Day Hats Contest 

Show your creativity to the world by entering in one of the following five categories: Most Glamorous, Best Racing Theme, Funniest/Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator and Flowers/All Other between 11:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Contest entry is free and all entrants will receive two free admission passes to return to the races. Winners in each category receive a price. 

The Grand Prize winner gets a Fairmont Grand Del Mar one-night stay and dinner for two at Addison Restaurant, featuring Chef William Bradley’s multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings. A total value of more than $1,000.

First place: $300 plus StudioSavvy Gift Basket valued at $250

Second place: $200

Third place: $100

The Party

As soon as the race wraps up, head over to the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe from 5pm to 10pm for Hats, Heels, and Hooves Opening Day After Party. Enjoy an unforgettable night and indulge yourself with fine food, spirits, and entertainment. The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe will transform into an authentic Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm where guests can mingle with some of the jockeys while revelling in live entertainment by Sure Fire Soul Ensemble and DJ Scotto.  A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund (PDJF), which provides financial assistance to approximately 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic, on-track injuries.”

Before we go on to the schedule of activities for 2015 Del Mar Horse Race, I would like to give you a quick history of Del Mar Thorough Bred Club (DMTC). DMTC was formed in 1968 by a group of highly respected Owners and Horse Breeders in California. Their main goal is to conduct a First class horse racing meet each summer on Del Mar Fairgrounds. Every year on their opening day their ” Opening Day Hats Contest” which started in 1995 to make their glamorous event more glamorous than before.

Watch the horses work out, ask questions of famous jockeys and trainers and enjoy free coffee, juice and donuts on the Seaside Terrace. Track announcer Trevor Denman hosts from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.

FREE AND EASY WEDNESDAYS 

Every Wednesday– Receive FREE Stretch Run Admission, FREE Program and FREE Seat along with HALF PRICE Beer (domestic drafts), Sodas and Hot Dogs at select Stretch Run and Clubhouse concession stands. Just present your Diamond Club Card at the entry gate. (You can sign up for one for free.)

DAYBREAK AT DEL MAR

Saturdays and Sundays, 7:30–9:30 a.m. – Watch the horses in their morning workouts while enjoying a tasty breakfast in the Clubhouse Terrace Restaurant each weekend.

FAMILY WEEKENDS

Every Saturday and Sunday– Join us for a day filled with family events in the infield. The FREE activities feature: Inflatable games and rides, pony rides, face painters, GameZone and more.

JOCKEY PHOTO DAY 

 July 19 – Fans have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with their favorite Del Mar riders in the Plaza de Mexico from noon to 1 p.m.

FAMILY FUN DAY & WEBKINZ PLUSH HORSE GIVEAWAY

July 19 – Family Fun Day is back and better than ever! This special day is packed with numerous FREE attractions for the entire family from 1:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. in the spacious racetrack infield. Activities include: Webkinz plush horse giveaway to children 12 & under, rock climbing walls, bungee trampolines, pony rides, face painters, caricature artist, rides, games and more.

THE OFFSPRING CONCERT & CRAFT BEER FEST

July 25 –Purchase samples of over 100 different flavors of cold brews during the Craft Beer Fest beginning at 1:00 p.m. Then stick around after the races for a free concert featuring alternative rockers – The Offspring – on the Seaside Stage.

REGGAE FESTIVAL FEATURING ZIGGY MARLEY

August 1 – Reggae will be jammin’ once more as reggae legend Ziggy Marley returns to his favorite racetrack. The music master is sure to draw another rollicking crowd to the Seaside Stage after the races.

T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY & WESTERN REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF 

August 8 – Each fan through the gates will receive a cool Del Mar T-Shirt – either a regular one or a special women’s cut – free with paid admission, while supplies last.

GOURMET FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL 

August 15 – Come enjoy a variety of some of the hottest eats in Southern California from real gourmet chefs as over 50 gourmet food trucks serve their eclectic bests from noon to 6:00 p.m.

PACIFIC CLASSIC DAY 

August 22 – Del Mar’s best race day of the year is headed by a trio of sparkling graded stakes races. You’ll get to see the top horses in the west in the $1-Million TVG Pacific Classic.

CRAFT BEER FEST & BEACH BAG GIVEAWAY

August 29 – Purchase samples of over 100 different flavors of cold microbrews during the Craft Beer Fest beginning at 1:00 p.m. Each fan through the gates will receive a Del Mar Beach Bag, free with paid admission, while supplies last.

WEEZER CONCERT

September 6 –Following the races is a free concert featuring Del Mar’s favorite alternative band – Weezer – on the Seaside Stage.
